FAQ
What is the BetterRxCard?
The BetterRxCard is a free discount drug card that you can use at your pharmacy if you do not have insurance for one or more of your current prescriptions. You might be able to save even more if you have high cost brand name drugs you are taking through our exclusive EquivaMeds service. EquivaMeds helps you and your doctor find lower cost, but equally effective, prescription drug options. Read more.
How do I qualify?
Everyone qualifies for the BetterRxCard. All you need to do is print out a card and bring it to your pharmacy. There are no age restrictions, no preexisting condition restrictions, and no residency restrictions. Simply said, there are no restrictions at all. So relax, you are already qualified!
Can I use the BetterRxCard if I already have insurance?
Use your insurance if you have it for your prescription drug. Many times people with insurance are prescribed medication from their doctor that is not covered by their insurance. Under that circumstance, you can use the BetterRxCard. If you have insurance but pay a very high copay to get your medication you should try EquivaMeds, which is offered exclusively with the BetterRxCard.
I use Medicare Part D. Can I use the BetterRxCard?
Medicare Part D is an insurance program sponsored and supported by the U.S. government for citizens over the age of 65. It provides discounted drugs through a plan that you sign up through an insurance carrier you choose.
Medicare Part D coverage covers your costs until you reach the Donut Hole (sometimes spelled Doughnut Hole). This is an area, depending on your Part D prescription drug plan, where the participant (you) cover up to 100% of your generic prescription drug cost and 50% of your brand-name prescription costs. Recently the Donut Hole dollar amounts where no Medicare coverage existed was began at $2,840 and ended after you have spent more than $4,550 out-of-pocket on prescription drugs.
If you find yourself in the Medicare Part D Donut Hole, the Gen-A Discount Drug Card can help you save on your prescription drug costs.
The key is when you enter the Donut Hole. If you enter early in the year and you believe you will definitely get through to the other side –when Medicare Part D picks most of your costs– then you should NOT use ANY discount card as these claims may not be accepted by Medicare. If that happens, you will never reach the other side of the Donut Hole where you benefit from Medicare paying most of your costs.
On the other hand, many people reach the Donut Hole late in the year and have no chance of getting to the other side. If that is you, then you should DEFINITELY use the Gen-A Discount Drug Card to help keep your prescription drug costs low until the New Year.
Privacy is very important to me. Is my information kept private?
Yes, your information is kept private, never sold to any 3rd party, and in compliance with HIPAA regulations through security technology.
Security Technology
EquivaMeds ensures the safety of your financial and health information using advanced, 256-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology. Payment processing is done by Authorize.net, which processes more than a billion financial transactions each year for its 238,000 clients.
HIPAA
The HIPAA Privacy Rule, established by the US Department of Health and Human Services, establishes national standards to protect individuals’ medical records and other personal health information and applies to health plans, health care clearinghouses, and those health care providers that conduct certain health care transactions electronically. The Rule requires appropriate safeguards to protect the privacy of personal health information, and sets limits and conditions on the uses and disclosures that may be made of such information without patient authorization. Because EquivaMeds is a research tool and not a medical provider, our compliance with this standard is voluntary.
How about the rest of my family and friends?
Your family and friends can use the BetterRxCard too. Just print out a card or share yours; it works either way. And if you have friends you know that might benefit from the card you can tell them about it on Twitter and Facebook.
Where can I use the BetterRxCard?
BetterRxCard has partnered with over 60,000 pharmacies so your local pharmacy is probably already participating. To find out, use our pharmacy locator tool or, if you are on the road, try our mobile tool.
If you are traveling or move to a new city or state, you can still use your BetterRxCard at your new pharmacy.
Why is my pharmacy participating in this program?
All pharmacies -- large chain stores, grocery and mass market pharmacies, as well as independent pharmacies-- are interested in helping you, their customer, while providing the best pharmacy services for you so that you will keep coming back. Supporting a program like BetterRxCard helps them to help you.
How much does it cost?
BetterRxCard program is FREE to you, your family members, and friends.
Which prescription drugs are included in the BetterRxCard program?
You should see savings when you use your BetterRxCard on FDA-approved drugs. However, there are some instances, particularly with low cost generic drugs already priced so low, that no discount is available.
Does my physician need to know about this program?
No. The pharmacist will take care of providing you with the discount when you are at the pharmacy.
What can I save?
You can save using the BetterRxCard on both generic and brand name drugs. The savings you experience will literally be from 0% to 70% or more, depending on the drug, but most people will see an average of around 30% or so off what you might otherwise pay if you do not have insurance coverage for that prescription.
How do I get a card?
You can print your own card out right now; just click here. If you need a bulk amount of cards or you’d like us to work with your pharmacy on pre-printed cards, contact us.
Can I get a card at my county or city office?
BetterRxCard is working with cities and counties nationwide to get our program approved as the official discount card program locally. We encourage you to contact your local government office to tell them about the BetterRxCard program.
Can I use it for my pet’s medications?
Yes! There are many pet medications prescribed by veterinarians that are also prescribed by physicians for human use. You can use your BetterRxCard for these medications and realize similar discount savings at your local pharmacy.
How does BetterRxCard help me with an expensive copay of my brand name medication?
Discount drug cards can help if you do not have insurance for your prescription drug. For example, if you are taking Nexium for acid reflux or Lipitor to manage your high cholesterol and you have prescription drug insurance, you may pay $50, $60 or even $70 in copay costs for these medications.
But in these, and many other cases, there are options, even if there is not a generic drug available. For these instances you need to do the following;
- Research for other options in other drug classes that could help you
- Research the pricing for each of these other drug options
- Print out your research and bring it to your doctor for your next appointment
Or you can use EquivaMeds, a fast, efficient way to work through this process and lower your prescription drug costs.
What is EquivaMeds?
Created by physicians, EquivaMeds helps your doctor understand the one thing he or she doesn’t know about your health care: the out-of-pocket cost of your prescription drugs. Like generics, equivalent-class medications can save money for millions of people without reducing the quality of your care.
Our members save an average of $893 per year.
EquivaMeds is not an online pharmacy, Canadian pharmacy or a pharmaceutical company site. We simply provide more affordable ways to stay healthy—even if you’re already taking generics.
How do I access EquivaMeds if I choose?
You can try EquivaMeds now to see if you can save anything on your current drugs. If you can then there is a small, one-time cost which we have discounted for BetterRxCard members from $19.95 to $4.95 and comes with this unique guarantee: If we can’t show you a way to save at least $120, we’ll refund your fee.
You can determine your savings in three easy steps and we don’t ask for any information until after you see your estimated savings.
